Growing up in Ponca City, Oklahoma, Fred Fellows was literally
surrounded by art from an early age. His grandmother was an
aspiring artist and had numerous paintings displayed throughout her
home. In addition, Ponca City is close to the Osage and Oto
Indian reservations and he developed a deep respect for these
Native cultures that would later reveal itself in his
Fellows eventually became director of art at Northrop Aircraft
and produced artwork for the company's various publications.
His extensive collection of Western artifacts has provided ample
material for his well-documented paintings. Fellows'
philosophy of painting can be summed up forthrightly;
is important about a painting is that the creative act has taken
place. It makes our lives better."
